Music Marketing & Music Industry Studies

Music industry study at UTSA is built on a core principle: the music marketplace today demands a balanced understanding of the creative, technological, social, and economic aspects of music.

The Bachelor of Music – Music Marketing program explores music as art, entertainment, and business.  It examines the spectrum of musical products and services in the modern marketplace and the kinds of vocational and avocational opportunities that are available. Students will have the chance to develop their intellectual understanding and  practical skills through coursework, individual projects, student organizations , and the music marketing internship .  The BM curriculum reflects both traditional and contemporary aspects of musical training, a substantial component of business coursework, as well as specialized courses in the music industry and the modern tools of music recording and production.

Elective cousework, chosen with a program advisor , offers students the chance to customize their education by earning a Minor in Marketing, Management, Non-Profit Management, Film Studies (newly proposed), and/or the Certificate in Music Technology.  Students have the opportunity to choose electives leading toward graduate study in music, business, entertainment law, or other possibilities developed in consultation with the program advisor.

Our Bachelor of Arts in Music degree program is intended to provide even more options for students who want to explore interdisciplinary study of the music industry.  Details about this program are available by contacting Dr. James Balentine.
