THEME: Surfin’ UTSA!
In our 14th year, the UTSA Choir Camp continues to be a leader in the Texas All-State Choir preparatory process. Outstanding clinicians from prominent Texas high school music programs along with UTSA’s own superb conductors and faculty provide an intensive study of the All-State audition music to 250 high school campers from across the state of Texas.

HOUSING & MEALS All campers are required to stay on campus for the duration of camp and will be housed at Chisholm Hall, UTSA’s on-campus dormitory. Each room accommodates two people and features a private bath. Campers will need to provide their own towels, sheets, blankets, and a pillow. Camp and dorm staff will be on-site for student supervision. Meals will be provided beginning on Monday morning through lunch on Wednesday. Special dietary needs should be indicated on the application or in separate correspondence at least one week prior to camp.
ACTIVITIES Within each action-packed day are rehearsals, focus sessions, opportunities for private voice lessons, and seminars. Beyond that, our “Fun Squad” makes its mission to have something fun for everyone. Showcase your talent in the back-by-popular-demand Talent Show. Participate in the crazy relays and games in our daily Block Parties and, after hours, unwind during our evening events as we get in the “Surfin’ UTSA” spirit!
EARLY DEPARTURE We realize that some campers may need to leave prior to the conclusion of camp. In order to assure safety for the camper and convenience in retrieving luggage from the dorm, we will need notification in writing prior to the beginning of camp. Please include the anticipated time of departure along with the name of the individual responsible for transporting the camper.
THE CONDUCTORS Dr. John Silantien has taught and conducted choirs on the secondary and collegiate levels in Texas, the Washington, D. C., area, and on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Illinois. His awards include a Rockefeller grant for choral conducting at Aspen, Colorado, and a Fulbright award for research in London, England. He presently serves as Director of Choral Activities at the University of Texas at San Antonio and as Director of the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers. Between 1992 and 1998, he served as Editor of the Choral Journal, the official publication of the American Choral Directors Association. He serves frequently as adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor. During the summer of 1999, he lectured at an international conference of choral musicians held in Brasilia, Brazil. He is listed in the International Who's Who in Music and Who’s Who among America’s Teachers. Choirs under his direction have been invited to perform before the Music Educators National Conference, the American Choral Directors Association, the Texas Choral Directors Association, and the Texas Music Educators Association. In addition, Silantien’s choirs have sung in New York City's Lincoln Center and London's Royal Festival Hall as well as major venues in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Dr. Gary Mabry, Associate Professor, serves as a member of the voice faculty and conductor of the UTSA Women's Choir and Jazz Choir. He received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Colorado. Dr. Mabry is frequently involved as an adjudicator and clinician for both vocal and choral festivals and workshops. He has served as president of the South Texas Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and as the Texas Repertoire and Standards Chair for Women's Choirs in the Southwest Division of the American Choral Directors Association. Mabry served as Artistic Director and conductor of the San Antonio Choral Society
from 1983 to 2006. He is part of the music staff of Travis Park United Methodist Church.UTSA Nestled in the foothills of the Texas Hill Country, the University of Texas at San Antonio is the premier institution of higher education in South Texas and among the fastest growing universities in the state. THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC With approximately 300 music majors seeking degrees in performance, music education and music marketing, the UTSA Department of Music thrives as one of the largest music departments in the state of Texas. Innovative programs and small classes have provided a 100-percent job placement rate for our Vocal Music Studies majors. With 12 major ensembles, students can experience a variety of performance opportunities. The vocal ensembles include Concert Choir, Women’s Choir, Chorus, Madrigal Singers, Jazz Choir and Lyric Theatre. Our UTSA Vocal Music Area majors have earned awards in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competitions and have sung with the New York Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Dallas Opera, El Paso Opera, San Francisco Opera and many others. Our alumni have been accepted to major graduate schools, participate in apprentice programs, sing with leading opera companies around the nation and have secured jobs at prominent universities.

REFUND POLICY A refund of the full amount minus $50 is available for cancellation up to two weeks prior to camp. As of one week prior to camp, there will be no further refunds. All refund requests must be made in writing including the name of the camper and the individual requesting refund.
