Changes in Movie and TV Art Brought by Sound
Movies and TV are complete arts combining seeing
and hearing. In that way, what kind of function does sound perform in
movie and TV art? Furthermore, how many potentialities does it have
in art creation? Soulie, a French artist, dwelt on the concept in his
book Cue at Art. He states that there are artistic factors in how
people feel about sound because sound can be very illusive in our
imagination. Moreover, movement and rhythm in the physical world
produces a variety of sounds. We use these sounds to describe what we
have seen. Physiologically, through our sense of hearing, we can
analyze several outdoor sound simultaneously, synthesizing different
sounds. So we may say, in comparison, visual images come to us in
straight lines. However, the sends of hearing is perceived from all
directions.
As we all know, movies and TV plays are formed by
many factors, including both pictures and sounds; the former is
continuously flat, the latter, on and off. In addition to technical
processing in a movie, the sound can be used to describe the
environment, serve as a foil to the atmosphere, and connect the
shots, and endow the pictures with the functions of montage, which
creates an artistic correction that picture alone can't show. Also,
it brightens the picture by adding or dotting by emphasizing or
exaggerating or replenishing. However, it can't take precedence over
the picture, instead, it should be used to attract the regulated
atmosphere created by the directors and strengthen the reality and
appeal of the picture as more green leaves to beautiful flowers. All
in all, the figure on the screen is being accompanied by wound for
the imagination. For instance, a moving car has its unique sound,
just as the sea does. Psychology shows that sensation is the basis of
perception, perception is formed by sensation, and through perception
people get the reflection of the objects. The sound we hear is
particularly characteristic although our ears can't distinguish it
quite as well as our eyes distinguish images. Everyone has the
ability to observe pictures and distinguish sounds. One can also
imagine the picture through sounds so as to thoroughly understand the
theme of the move. In summary, the sound brings changes to move and
TV art as follows:
In his book, Outline of Scenario, Professor
Wand, Liu of Beijing Film Institute states, "Visual space is always
combined with sounds of real life. Only when they are can people
obtain the scene of reality."
In other words, sound shapes movie and TV art into
a deep and broad world, rich in gradation, space, and color, and
devotes visual figures to the audience in a natural way.
The Function and Usage of Sound in Movie and TV Art
With the development of modem life, sound has
become important for reasoning and feeling, making it extremely
important in move and TV arts. Within sound there are both realistic
and abstract styles. Realistic sound refers to any natural sound
except dialogue and music. By expressing and symbolizing, it exceeds
its information and its accompanying pictures. For examples, there is
a set of shots to introduce the noisy early morning scene in a
workers' dormitory after they have awakened. By utilizing our rich
imagination, we can change the natural sounds and the produced sound
into new and brilliant sound space, then take the subjective artistic
refinement and the aesthetic study on wound into our conceiving, so
that we can change the way that gives subjective shots to subjective
sounds. That is, we should edit the natural sounds such as irregular
footsteps, shouting, singing, splashing of water from the faucet, the
opening and closing of doors, the chopping of vegetables, etc., and
record them together in gradations to form a specific kitchen
symphony in the dormitory. This is a good way to play up the
circumstance with reality. The above-mentioned view show that the
vividness of realistic sound lies in creating the environment with
reality to strengthen the appeal of the theme of the picture. The
other feature of the realistic sound is to produce gradation and
density of screen space. We may also say it is to recall the sound.
It can produce a three-dimensional illusion of the sound. In other
words, it can make distant object small and their sounds vague, or
vice versa. So, the strong and vivid three-dimensional sense of the
sound closely links the illusion with the environment. For instance,
words can't be heard clearly, or al all, if in a bustling street or a
noisy fair. However, some tiny sounds will seem to be clear and loud
during a silent night. Consequently, these principles are used in
move and TV art. In conclusion, realistic sound has the following
actions:
Abstract sound, including artistic sound and the subjective processing of the sound, will give a new artistic conception, or become some kind of potential information whose effect cannot be produced by language alone. Just as time and space in the movies have broken the bonds of reality and of the stage, seeking freedom, abstract sound is becoming a unique artistic techniques, with specific artistic ways of adding color to the screen.
The Usage of Music in Movie and TV Art
The visual and auditory senses must be combined to
analyze the music in movie and TV art, not analyzing the function of
music alone, but with the perspective of the artistic effect of their
combination.
Exaggerating the atmosphere
The visual figure of a picture's atmosphere will
be as monotonous as a flat surface unless modified by sound. Given
sound and music, it will be set off an fully developed. Because of
three-dimensional sense, the atmosphere stands out, causing one to
feel personally on the scene. Here is an example. There is a
Chinese-produced television documentary named Talking About the
Canal ("Canal;" refers to the Jingling Can4 the longest in
China). At the beginning of the first section called "The
Disappearance of the Canal". an anxious atmosphere is shown in one
section of the canal where it was terribly lacking of water. In the
picture, the whistling wind shakes the trees, with leaves falling
down, signing, followed by many dry and useless riverbed and water
conservancy projects... All these scenes bring out a moving
atmosphere. This is accompanied by a piece of thoughtful music. With
the uneasy color added by the roaring of the fall wind, the melody
wanders forward lie a series of gentle waves, playing up the
atmosphere that the picture tries to describe and adding color to the
moving and exiting visual motion. The use of music and sounds
suddenly shortens the distance between regulated atmosphere and one's
emotion and make the audience feel they are right there. Thus, in a
splendid and effective way, the music connect the picture and the
sound to exaggerate the atmosphere.
Revealing and deepening the theme
In movie and TV production the picture should
express a certain theme. Music as a form of art, can do as well.
Usually, a TV show or TV series has one, even several main melodies,
which will summarize and deepen the theme when they are continuously
repeated. As a matter of fact, these melodies or musical themes point
out the theme with musically notes through the auditory sense. For
instance, opening theme songs always accompany a picture in the form
of instrumental music, which shows, strengthens, and deepens the
theme. In other words, it is the core use of music in the picture,
and it is outside effect which plays up or exaggerate the atmosphere.
The essential purpose of adding music to the picture is to show and
deepen the theme.
Using music to replace sound
Sound and music are closely related because both
make timber the basic information. The tone color of music resembles
natural sound very much. For example, the music of a piano or sharp
sounds resemble flowing waters; the music of wood wind instruments
sound like singing birds; and the low-pitched instruments sounds are
like heavy footsteps. Because of these likenesses, music can replace
sound and exactly express implied meaning. Essentially, sound that is
added to the scene refines and sublimates the natural sound in a
wonderful manner. That is why music is moving and beautiful, much
better than natural sound. For instance, in Cultural Origin of the
Rivers (A Chinese-produced documentary), there is a piece of music
used to describe the sound of a herd of rushing antelopes. By
violently striking the drum, with the flash-rhythm of stringed
instruments, the composer creates a scene filled with sounds of hoofs
and clouds of dust. The vivid description of the sound of antelopes'
hoofs differs from the natural ones. With a little exaggeration and
the countless beauty of art, it is not a replacement but an artistic
combination of music and sound. All in all, the function of music in
movie and TV art is the comprehensive artistic effect produced by
combining visual art and auditory art. These functions or effects are
produced not only for the natural characteristics of music, but for
the combination of pictures and sounds. Therefore, we can actively
master the features and strong point of TV music by analyzing,
researching, accumulating, and discussing all these function. In this
manner, improved skills will achieve more complete artistic
effects.
