Music Auditions And Scholarships

UTSA has a tradition of investing in, recognizing, and encouraging promising musicians who seek careers in music. Former UTSA scholarship recipients and graduates are successfully teaching in public schools and universities, attending prestigious graduate schools, conducting professional ensembles, performing in major orchestras, producing their own weekly television programs, and winning prestigious performance competitions. Former students include a past winner of the Steinway Piano Competition and the National Metropolitan Opera Auditions.  UTSA Music Scholarships are awarded to talented students who wish to major in music at UTSA. Scholarships may also be available to non-music majors based on ensemble needs.

***Note: Auditions for students who wish to enter in the Spring 2008 semester will be held December 5-11, 2007. For more information, or to schedule an audition, please contact April Hufty at april.hufty@utsa.edu.***

Outstanding students will be awarded scholarships based on auditions and other supporting information, in addition to the needs of the Department of Music. Students who wish to be considered for a music scholarship at their audition must check the appropriate box on the audition application. Note: Students planning to audition on May 17 will be considered for acceptance only.

Application/Audition Process

Students who wish to apply for a scholarship must audition on the UTSA campus, at a regional location (prior arrangement with UTSA faculty member is necessary), or by high quality cassette, CD, or video recording (instrumentalists and guitarists must submit a high quality VHS recording). If you live within a 300 mile radius you must audition in person.

If you plan to audition in person:

  • Apply to the University and receive your UTSA Banner ID number.
  • Submit a completed audition application (apply online here) and other required documents no later than 1 week prior to your requested audition date.
  • Prepare the appropriate audition repertoire.

Your request will be confirmed and a specific audition time will be assigned.

If you plan to audition by audio or video recording:

  • a completed application must  accompany your tape or CD
  • audition repertoire requirements are the same as for live auditions
  • your name and telephone number must be on the tape or CD
  • recordings must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2008 and must be mailed to the address listed on the application
  • tapes and CDs cannot be returned.
