Ph.D. in Music
Major in Music Psychology
The Division of Music at the University of Texas at San Antonio is proposing to offer a Ph.D. in Music with a major in Music Psychology. As part of the proposal process we are seeking input from potential students regarding interest in the program.
This outline of the program is for a 90-hr. post-baccalaureate program:

(music theory, history and performance) |

Proseminar in Music Psychology
(the psychology, anthropology, sociology, biology, physics, and philosophy of music) |

Seminar in Music Psychology
(current topics in music psychology, such as Music Cognition, Fetal and Infant Responses to Music, Neuromusical Research, etc.) |
15 hrs.

Research Core
(music technology for researchers, research design, and statistics |

Dissertation

*Note: a M.M. in Music, Music Psychology, can be earned by completing 15 hours of the Music Core (all but a 3-hour elective), Proseminars (15 hrs.), either Music Technology for Researchers or Statistics and Experimental Design for Music Researchers (3 hrs.), plus a Research Project (3 hrs.) for a total of 36 hours.
** Each candidate, under the guidance of the advisor and an appointed committee, will design a course of study that will prepare him/her for the chosen career path. Electives will be used to apply music psychology to more traditional areas. A music educator might specialize in the application of technology to music learning, a music theorist might specialize in music perception and cognition, a music therapist might specialize in music for the cognitively impaired, and so on.
