Program
The UTSA Percussion Ensemble is open to music majors as well as non-majors. The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:00pm in the UTSA Band Hall. The ensemble performs at least one formal concert per semester in the UTSA Recital Hall. Other performances, such as run-outs to schools and retirement homes are also scheduled. Last year's annual tour took the ensemble to the Laredo area where the group performed at 5 High Schools. The ensemble performed at Air Force Village II Retirement Community in March and the Texas Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society awarded the ensemble a $250 grant to perform and promote percussion education at local junior high and high schools in April. The group performs traditional percussion ensemble music, new music, and popular arrangements and transcriptions.
The UTSA Marimba Ensemble was formed in April of 1997. The group performs a variety of popular and traditional Guatemalan and Mexican literature. They have performed at restaurants, parties, weddings, and other special events, including an appearance on the Sonny Melendrez Show on MAGIC 105 FM. In the spring of 1999 the UTSA Music Division was awarded a grant from the Genevieve McDavitt Orsinger Foundation for the purchase of a 5-octave Rosewood marimba.
Recently the UTSA Music Division was awarded a grant to develop a Steel Drum Ensemble. The Genevieve McDavitt Orsinger Foundation presented Mrs. Sherry Rubins and the Percussion program with the grant in May of 1998. The premiere performance of the UTSA Steel Drum Ensemble was in April of 1999. This group meets every Tuesday from 5:00-6:00 PM in the UTSA Band Hall.
Each of the above groups requires an audition for placement.
Please contact the Division of Music office at (210) 458-4354 for more information.

(Mitch Dunlap, Rodolpho Diaz, and John Dominguez) Mr. Diaz was also the second place winner at the concert snare drum contest at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Phoenix in 1995. A number of the students also participate in Drum Corps during the summer, including the Cadets of Bergen County, Pioneer, Blue Knights, and Lone Star.
