UTSA Music Division Ensembles Include:

Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, University Band, Orchestra,
Jazz Band, Jazz Combos, Rock Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Marimba Ensemble, Steel Drum Program

 

 

The UTSA Percussion Ensemble is open to music majors as well as non-majors. The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:00pm in the UTSA Band Hall. The ensemble performs at least one formal concert per semester in the UTSA Recital Hall. Other performances, such as run-outs to schools and retirement homes are also scheduled. The group performs traditional percussion ensemble music, new music, and popular arrangements and transcriptions.

The UTSA Marimba Ensemble was formed in April of 1997. The group performs a variety of popular and traditional Guatemalan and Mexican literature. They have performed at restaurants, parties, weddings, and other special events. In the spring of 1999 the UTSA Music Division was awarded a grant from the Genevieve McDavitt Orsinger Foundation for the purchase of a 5-octave Rosewood marimba.

The UTSA Steel Drum Ensemble was formed in 1999. The Genevieve McDavitt Orsinger Foundation presented Mrs. Sherry Rubins and the Percussion program with the grant in May of 1998. The premiere performance of the UTSA Steel Drum Ensemble was in April of 1999. This group meets every Tuesday from 5:00-6:00 PM in the UTSA Band Hall.

Each of the above groups requires an audition for placement.

Percussion Ensemble on Tour to Laredo

 


Sherry RubinsMrs. Sherry D. Rubins directs the UTSA Percussion program. Mrs. Rubins recently and over four years has fulfilled the roles of either Principal Timpanist or Assistant Principal Timpanist/Percussionist with the San Antonio Symphony. Additionally, for the past 25 years Mrs. Rubins has performed as an extra musician with the San Antonio Symphony and she has been the principal percussionist/timpanist with the Mid-Texas Symphony since 1991. She has been Vice-President of the Texas Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society and on the faculty of the Interlochen Arts Camp, the Texas Music Festival at the University of Houston, the Stephen F. Austin University Percussion Symposium, Texas Lutheran University, and the University of Houston. Mrs. Rubins has presented clinics and concerts at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, Texas Bandmasters Convention, Texas Music Educators Association Convention, and the Texas Day of Percussion. Mrs. Rubins is a busy freelance performer throughout the South Texas area and she is also an educational clinician for the Zildjian Company as well as the Vic Firth Company.


Many clinicians and guest artists visit the UTSA campus every year. Past guests include Michael Burritt (marimba), Steve Houghton (drum set/percussion), Norm Weinberg (electronic percussion), Fred Sanford (marching percussion), Richie Morales (drum set), Ed Soph (drum set), Nebojsa Zivkovic (marimba), Gary Chaffee (drum set), Susan Powell (xylophone/marimba), Nancy Zeltsman (marimba), and Mark Ford (marimba), Thom Hannum (marching percussion), Robert Van Sice (marimba), Richie Garcia (Latin percussion), Anton Fig (drum set), Billy Cobham (drum set), Dave Samuels (vibes), Greg Bissonette (drum set), Bob Becker (percussion), Tim Adams (percussion), Jim Atwood (timpani), Neil Grover (percussion), Christopher Deane (percussion), Gary Gibson (steel drums), Darren Dyke (steel drums), Jack Brennan (timpani), Warren Johnson (cymbals), and Bill Patterson (snare drum).


UTSA percussion students have won numerous awards. Many percussionists have been winners of the UTSA Concerto/Aria Competition. (Mitch Dunlap, Rodolpho Diaz, John Dominguez, Juan Mendoza). A number of the students also participate in Drum Corps during the summer, including the Cadets of Bergen County, Pioneer, Blue Knights, Lone Star, The Academy, Carolina Crown, The Cavaliers, and The Phantom Regiment.
