The UTSA Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Eugene Dowdy, is open to all university students by audition.  Musicians who perform in the Orchestra receive valuable training in performance while studying literature from the standard orchestral repertoire.  The Orchestra performs atleast 3 concerts per semester in the UTSA Recital Hall.

Each fall semester the Orchestra and combined UTSA choirs perform a major work as part of their holiday concert.

Past performances include Mass in C Major "Coronation" by Mozart, Handel's Messiah, Orff's Carmina Burana, and Poulenc's Gloria.

In the fall semesters of 2003 and 2004 the UTSA Orchestra was invited to perform with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan during their annual Mariachi Conference held in San Antonio.

The annual Concerto and Aria competition is open to all music majors enrolled in private instruction. Students get to experience competition for the opportunity to perform with the UTSA Orchestra.

The Orchestra serves as the Opera Orchestra for the UTSA Lyric Theatre.  Last Spring, UTSA performed a World Premiere opera, Gods of Mischief, by Seymour Barab.

Other events include an off-campus tour and a Fiesta San Antonio event, Fiesta Under the Stars.

String players of any major have the opportunity to audition and perform in the UTSA Orchestra. Wind and Percussion students must have approval from the appropriate faculty. Auditions are held during the week before classes begin each fall semester.

For more information regarding auditions, please call Dr. Eugene Dowdy at 210-458-4354. You may also reach him via email at eugene.dowdy@utsa.edu.

The Orchestra rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:15pm to 1:45pm in the
Instrumental Rehearsal Hall.
