The UTSA Department of Music is authorized to award the Bachelor of Music degree. This degree is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Students who are accepted into the Music Studies emphases in the Bachelor of Music program must select one of two concentrations:
All-Level Instrumental Track
or
All-Level Choral Track
This emphasis leads to teacher certification.
Students entering the Bachelor of Music program with a Music Studies emphasis may be required to satisfy additional requirements as prescribed by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) and are advised to consult the College of Education and Human Develoopment Advising and Certification Center.
Diagnostic examinations in music theory and music history are given to music majors entering UTSA for the first time. These examinations are given at the beginning of each semester and are used as an aid in counseling.
In order to declare music as a major, students must successfully audition for faculty in their principal performance area. This audition will also serve as a basis for placement into ensembles and private instruction.
