Keyboard Studies at UTSA

The UTSA Keyboard Area is a distinguished artist faculty of performers and pedagogues who are dedicated to the musical training of their students.  Private instruction in both piano and organ is offered to performance majors, pedagogy majors, keyboard principals, and secondary students.  The program offers intense training in the masterpieces of literature with a focus on both performance and pedagogy.  Students have the opportunity and are strongly urged to play chamber music, perform in two-piano ensemble, and accompany both instrumental and vocal music majors.

In addition to hearing fine faculty performances, UTSA students are able to hear world-class pianists perform regularly in the San Antonio area.  Because of our close association with civic music organizations, guest artists often visit the Department of Music to present master classes, workshops, and performances for our students.  UTSA students are also invited frequently to perform, teach and accompany in the greater San Antonio area.

Scholarships and Assistantships

Scholarships are available at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and are awarded competitively on the basis of a live or taped audition.  A scholarship of $1,000 or more awarded to an out-of-state student carries with it a waiver of out-of-state tuition.  Graduate assistantships are also available on a limited basis to outstanding students.  In the keyboard area, assistantships are awarded in the area of accompanying and piano pedagogy.

Accompanying Opportunities

Numerous opportunities for professional accompanying are available at UTSA and other local colleges.  Accompanying in studios and for recitals is by private arrangement.

Community Outreach

The Keyboard Area is committed to outreach activities held locally, statewide, and throughout the nation.  Several major events of benefit to pianists are held on the UTSA campus:

The Janice Kay Hodges Contemporary Piano Competition is offered annually to pre-college pianists in grades 4-12.  UTSA faculty member Dr. Janice Kay Hodges founded the competition in 1984 with the mission of promoting the study and performance of contemporary piano literature.   In 1990 the competition was renamed in memoriam to Dr. Hodges and continues to grow in lasting tribute to its founder.

The Janice Kay Hodges Contemporary Piano Performance Award is open to collegiate-level pianists, ages 18-32.  In keeping with the promotion of contemporary music, participants must perform an original piano work written after 1945.  Cash prizes will be awarded for outstanding performances.

The Summer Music Institute for Piano and Strings was initiated in the summer of 2002.  It is a week-long intensive program of private lessons, chamber music coaching, theory classes, keyboard harmony, and ensembles for musicians ages 13-18.  Students work with UTSA music faculty and attend special programs such as a music technology seminar and a trip to the Round Top Music Festival.  The week culminates with two public recitals:  piano and string solo, and chamber ensemble.
