This five-day workshop will engage at the elements of music and language through kinesthetic awareness. Participants will be actively engaged in music making through movement—using music to connect the brain to the body and to tap into the feeling nature of the arts. While this workshop is primarily for the general music classroom, transfers will be made for the choral and instrumental classroom as well. Handouts and additional examples will help teachers take these ideas to their classrooms.

The Dalcroze Eurhythmics curriculum is conceived to prepare musicians, dancers, and actors with a sequential, comprehensive education and experience in rhythm and movement. The course is designed to develop rhythmic skills through listening, rhythmic reading, singing, improvisation, analysis, and notation, and to bring about an understanding of rhythm in its relation with phrasing, dynamics, tempo, and form.

Rhythmic movement, an integral part of the Dalcroze approach, is used to reinforce rhythmic and music concepts, and also to convey to students an awareness of the physical demands of the performing arts and in various therapy modalities. In all classes, concepts and objectives are illustrated with pertinent music examples and expressed through movement.

Faculty:

David Frego serves as Chair of the Department of Music at The University of Texas at San Antonio. As an instructor in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, he regularly performs and presents workshops around the globe. Teaching and research areas include dance philosophy and the application of Dalcroze Eurhythmics as palliative treatment for adults with post traumatic stress disorders.

Marla Butke is on the faculty at Ashland University and serves as the Coordinator of Music Education. Dr. Butke has taught general and choral music in public and private schools and is a frequent clinician and master teacher throughout Ohio with research interests focusing on reflective practice and movement-based education. She holds certifications in Orff-Schulwerk from The Ohio State University and Dalcroze Eurhythmics from Carnegie Mellon University.

Note: Graduate Credit is available. People looking for graduate credit must apply through the Graduate School by May 15. Please visit the Graduate School Website: http://www.graduateschool.utsa.edu/
Undergraduate credit is also available for UTSA Music Majors. Please speak with Dr. Frego.
