Undergraduate MUSIC MAJOR Audition Requirements

Winds/Brass/Percussion
Perform a Class I solo from the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List or two contrasting etudes (one slow and one fast). Students may also be asked to sight read.
Percussionists should prepare solos/etudes on at least 2 of the following instruments: concert snare, keyboard (marimba or xylophone), and timpani. Performance on all 3 instruments is preferred, and preparation of both two and four mallet keyboard repertoire is encouraged. Class One UIL solos or something of similar difficulty is acceptable. Drum set proficiency is not required. Should you also choose to audition on drum set please be prepared to perform a variety of styles. Piano/Organ
Performance Majors: Perform three (3) works representing contrasting musical styles chosen from the baroque, classical, romantic, or contemporary repertoire. Memorization required for piano auditions. Students may also be asked to sight read.
Non-Performance Majors: Perform two (2) works representing contrasting musical styles chosen from the baroque, classical, romantic, or contemporary repertoire. Memorization is preferred but not required. Students may also be asked to sight read.
Strings/Guitar
Perform two standard pieces from contrasting style periods.
Strings: Perform a Class I solo from the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List or two contrasting etudes (one slow and one fast). Memorization is required. Students may also be asked to sight read.
Guitar: Two short classical guitar pieces, not exceeding 10 minutes, played by memory on a nylon string classical guitar. Simple pieces by Fernando Sor, Guiliani, Tarrega, Milan, or others of similar difficulty are acceptable. Applicants must bring the printed music with them. Applicants with a strong interest and ability in jazz guitar may also perform an original solo arrangement if desired, in addition to the classical pieces.
Voice
NEW POLICY FOR VOICE APPLICANTS: A pre-screening DVD or Youtube recording is now required and will be used to evaluate whether a student will be invited to attend a live audition. Recordings and applications for voice students are subject to earlier application deadlines. All students planning on auditioning for voice in the Spring will need to send in their recording by February 15th. Video submissions should include:
- Two contrasting selections in the classical style
- Live piano accompaniment preferred
- Video performance should be a front view of the performer
- Music should be performed from memory
- Video should reflect a professional audition
Those who are invited to audition will perform two songs or arias in the classical style. One must be in English and one must be in a foreign language. Selections must be performed from memory.
Composition
Students who wish to be considered as composition majors must interview with the composition faculty. This required conference is in addition to the student’s instrumental or vocal audition. Students are asked to bring samples of their composition activity (scores and recordings) with them to the interview.
Graduate Audition Requirements
Guitar Performance
Prepare 15-20 minutes of music, performed from memory that demonstrates a level of mastery of classical guitar associated with the successful completion of a BM degree in guitar performance. Suggested repertoire would include works by Bach, Villa-lobos, Brouwer, Sor, or any standard works from the concert guitar repertoire. High quality, unedited video auditions are acceptable for out of state applicants.
Instrumental/Strings Performance
Prepare approximately 6-8 minutes of music – Standard repertoire solos, UIL current class I solos, All-state try-out music, or appropriate etudes. The music selected should allow the student to completely demonstrate their level of performance through two contrasting works (slower and expressive, faster and technically demanding). Accompanists are not required. Copies of music are not required.
Keyboard Performance or Pedagogy
Prepare a 50-60 minute program drawn from the standard repertoire, typically representing all styles from Baroque to the 20th Century. Memorization is required.
Voice Performance

Those who are invited to audition will prepare at least five selections (songs or arias) representing 4 different languages and various musical styles (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century). The selections must be performed from memory.
Conducting
Audition in person or provide a recent videotape demonstrating the level of mastery in a rehearsal or performance situation.
Music Performance
Audition in person or provide a recent tape demonstrating the level of mastery in the proposed performance medium.
Music Education
Submit a VHS videotape recording of teaching skills, a curriculum vitae or portfolio, document two years of successful elementary or secondary level teaching, and complete written entrance exam.
Piano Pedagogy and Performance
Audition in person or provide a recent tape demonstrating the level of mastery in piano.
