Laura Kelly, Music Theory, Music Literature

Laura Kelly holds the Ph.D. degree in Music Theory from The University of Texas at Austin. Her dissertation is a translation and study of August Halm's influential text Von Zwei Kulturen der Musik. She teaches music theory, aural skills, music literature, and world music at UTSA. Her principal research interests are in the history of theory and theory pedagogy. Dr. Kelly is also interested in teaching classes for the non-music major, and recently presented a paper with colleague Stacey Davis at the CMS-NASM National Conference on Music in General Studies entitled "Music Theory for the Non-Music Major: Goals and Approaches."

An active clarinetist, Dr. Kelly received her Master of Music degree in clarinet performance from DePaul University in Chicago, where she studied with Larry Combs and Julie DeRoche. Her Bachelor of Music degree, also in clarinet performance, is from The University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Both degrees were conferred with Highest Distinction.

Dr. Kelly lives in San Antonio with her husband Robert Black and their two children, Kevin and Miranda.
