Each spring, students are cast in a fully staged opera, which is performed with the UTSA Orchestra. Operas are presented in the 300-seat UTSA Downtown Campus Buena Vista Street Theatre. Repertoire is selected to ensure an all-student cast. Past Lyric Theatre production have included The Consul (Menotti), The Magic Flute (Mozart), Hansel and Gretel (Humperdinck), Albert Herring (Britten), Cosi fan tutte (Mozart), and Street Scene (Weill).
Beginning in the Fall of 2002, the UTSA Lyric Theatre program began producing a fully staged musical, also performed in the 300-seat UTSA Buena Vista Street Theatre. Das Barbecü, based on Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle and set in Texas (Luigs and Warrender) was the premier production of this type for the Lyric Theatre program.
The Opera Workshop class, scheduled each fall semester, offers voice students an opportunity to work on their stage skills. Classes focus on acting, stage movement, and singing. The final project is a workshop performance of opera scenes.
