Lyric Theatre

The Lyric Theatre program strives to present performance opportunities that will enrich the vocal degree programs offered at UTSA.

The Lyric Theatre Workshop meets during the fall semester each year. Students work on acting and performance skills for the singing artist. Guest artists are brought in to give a broader scope of experience to participants in the workshop. Opportunities to meet and work with Opera San Antonio performers, directors, and artistic staff are also made available to those participating in the class.

Each spring the Lyric Theatre and UTSA Orchestra present a fully staged opera, operetta or musical in either the Downtown Campus Buena Vista Theatre or the Main Campus Recital Hall. Productions are chosen based on the strengths and needs of the vocal students currently enrolled at UTSA. Recent productions include: The Tender Land – Copland; Suor Angelica – Puccini; The Old Maid and the Thief – Menotti; The Mikado – Gilbert and Sullivan; Street Scene – Weill … just to name a few. Lastly, the nationally recognized Opera on the Run program presents operas to area elementary schools each year. By May of 2016 the program will have performed for close to 200,000 elementary students in San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, and Edinburg.
