Mariachi Institute
UTSA Summer Mariachi Institute 2010 July 12-16, 2010
The Department of Music at the University of Texas San Antonio invites all mariachi educators and students in grades 9-12 to the UTSA Summer Mariachi Institute. The Institute offer educators an opportunity to further their teaching skills and students an opportunity to work with some of the very best mariachi educators. The Institute will run from Monday, July 12th thru Friday July 16th, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Instruction will be led by three of the top educators in mariachi public school –posted soon!
Recreational activities will be offered for all participants in the evenings each day of the Institute. The week will culminate with a concert on Friday evening, July 16, featuring the teachers and students of the UTSA Summer Mariachi Institute. The Institute is open to all teachers teaching mariachi in public or private institutions. Any high school mariachi student in grade 9-12 is invited to participate by audition. Information on the camp is as follows along with teacher and student applications. We hope to see you there.

Audition Information
Students:
- All students are required to be dual vocalists and instrumentalists
- Must submit Institute Application

Candidates must submit a VHS, DVD, or Youtube link (email link to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) of the following:
- Two selections on principal instrument from mariachi repertoire
- Additionally, student should submit a vocal selection
Deadlines: Submission of application & student audition video is June 17, 2010 Selection: Selected students will be notified on or before June 30, 2010.
Activities/Schedule
Workshops: The following workshops will be offered for teachers:
- Pedagogy for mariachi instrumentation
- Arranging for the mariachi ensemble (Finale & other software tutorials)
- History methodology for the mariachi tradition
- Instrumental & vocal interpretive techniques
- Literature & repertoire of the mariachi ensemble
- Classroom teaching methods for the mariachi ensemble
- Curriculum needs
- CPE Credit offered

- Stylistic Interpretive Techniques
- Student Leadership Training
- Performance Techniques
- Music Theory
- Private Instruction
- History of the mariachi
- Transposition & improvisation for mariachi
Insurance: All participants must complete the attached medical history information and medical release form.
Meals
Meals: Monday thru Friday, participants will be able to purchase lunch at the UTSA Food Court. A wide variety of foods are served at every meal. Participants may also bring a sack lunch each day. Camp staff will supervise meals.
