UTSA Concert Choir

Dr. John Silantien conducts the student ensemble in a concert entitled, "Looking Eastward," featuring music from Hungary, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania. China, Indonesia, and other countries. Zoltan Kodaly and Bela Bartok, two Hungarian composers who were 20th century pioneers in championing the folk music of their country, are represented by Bartok's "Four Slovak Folksongs" and Kodaly's "Agnus Dei" from Missa Brevis. The concert also contains sacred music by today's leading Estonian composer Arvo Part and a folk-song setting by Lithuanian composer Vaclavos Augustinas that uses four percussionists and four wind players. Chinese folk songs on the program include "The Jasmine Flower" and a Fantasy on the Mongolian folk tune "Magnificent Horses". Finally a song from southeastern Java that is typically sung at celebrations will be performed in the original Osing language. The concert will also feature the premiere performance by the UTSA Gamelan Ensemble. A combination of instruments popular throughout Indonesia, particularly Java na Bali. The public is invited to this free os charge event at Christ Episcopal Church (510 Belknap Place). 3pm (credits will not be issued at this off-campus event)
