Guitar Studies at UTSA
The Guitar program at UTSA is an exciting musical experience for guitarists from around the United States and beyond. Our graduates have achieved considerable success in competitions, auditions at leading graduate schools, and have built careers in music as performers and teachers. We often bring internationally renowned guitarists to UTSA to teach masterclasses, including Leo Brouwer, Pepe Romero, David Russell, Judicael Perroy, Roland Dyens, Ricardo Cobo, The Assads, and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, among others.

The Southwest Guitar Festival, hosted by UTSA every two years, is one of the most successful and exciting guitar festivals in the world today. We host an international competition for students at the festival. This is a great opportunity for UTSA guitar students to hear and get to know some of the best guitar students from around the world. In 2007, the first SWGF competition had finalists from France, Australia, the U.S., and Nicaragua.

While the heart of the guitar program at UTSA is rigorous training in classical guitar, we are introducing a certificate program in Jazz studies. This new program can include a Guitar Performance degree in which students study and perform both classical and jazz guitar on their recitals, with the goal of preparing dedicated students for further professional training and experience in classical guitar and jazz. This kind of musical versatility is increasingly valuable in the competitive professional music world, and has been central to my musical life.
