Master of Music Degrees and Graduate Certificates

Master of Music Degrees

The department of music offers Master of Music Degrees in the following emaphases:

Graduate Certificates

Certificate programs provide opportunities for postgraduate training to those with undergraduate degrees. Certificate programs are narrower in scope and shorter in duration than master’s degrees. Certificate programs are not “degree” programs. The department of music offers graduate certificates in the following emphases:

Please note that courses in which a grade of “C” or lower is earned are not applicable toward coursework for the Master of Music degrees or Graduate Certificates.

Instrumental or Choral Conducting

Degree candidates for the Master of Music degree with an emphasis in Conducting must complete a total of 31 semester credit hours:

  1. 10 semester credit hours in the area of concentration:

    MUS 5554 Music Performance–Performance Concentration (two semesters)
    MUS 6941 Recital
    MUS 6961 Comprehensive Examination

  2. 15 semester credit hours of other studies in music. Courses must include 9 hours in the areas of theory and analysis (MUS 5103 Applied Systems of Analysis, or MUS 6233 Twentieth-Century Analytical Techniques, or MUS 5133 Topics in Music Theory), history (MUS 5263 Topics in Music History), and research (MUS 5233 Introduction to Music Research). The remaining 6 hours must be satisfied by the completion of MUS 5223 Ensemble Repertoire and MUS 5523 Rehearsal Techniques.

  3. 6 semester credit hours of electives (approved by advisor), of which no more than 2 hours of ensemble will count toward the degree.

Special Degree Requirements: Students selecting the Music Conducting emphasis are required to participate for two semesters in an ensemble appropriate to their program of study and successfully complete a recital document and oral comprehensive examination.

Vocal and Instrumental Performance

Candidates for the Master of Music degree with an emphasis in Music Performance must complete a total of 31 semester credit hours:

  1. 10 semester credit hours in the area of concentration:

    MUS 5554 Music Performance–Performance Concentration (two semesters)
    MUS 6941 Recital
    MUS 6961 Comprehensive Examination

  2. 15 semester credit hours of other studies in music. Courses must include 9 hours in the areas of theory and analysis (MUS 5103 Applied Systems of Analysis, or MUS 6233 Twentieth-Century Analytical Techniques, or MUS 5133 Topics in Music Theory), history (MUS 5263 Topics in Music History), and research (MUS 5233 Introduction to Music Research). The remaining 6 hours must be satisfied by the completion of MUS 5223 Ensemble Repertoire and MUS 5523 Rehearsal Techniques.

  3. 6 semester credit hours of electives (approved by advisor), of which no more than 2 hours of ensemble will count toward the degree.

Special Degree Requirements: Students selecting the Music Performance emphasis are required to participate for two semesters in an ensemble appropriate to their program of study and successfully complete a recital document and oral comprehensive examination. Voice principles must take diagnostic examinations in French, German, Italian, and English lyric diction. If the student is not found proficient in any one of the languages, the appropriate course will be required.

Music Education

Candidates for the Master of Music degree with an emphasis in Music Education must complete a total of 36 semester credit hours. Candidates may select a thesis or nonthesis option.

Music Education Thesis Option

  1. 12 semester credit hours in the area of concentration:

    MUS 5403 Psychological Foundations of Music Education
    MUS 5413 Research in Music Education
    MUS 6423 Seminar in Music Education
    MUS 6913 Thesis in Music Education

  2. 15 semester credit hours of other studies in music. Courses must include 9 hours in the areas of theory and analysis (MUS 5103 Applied Systems of Analysis, or MUS 6233 Twentieth-Century Analytical Techniques, or MUS 5133 Topics in Music Theory), history (MUS 5263 Topics in Music History), and research (MUS 5233 Introduction to Music Research) The remaining hours must be satisfied by the completion of a minimum of 6 hours chosen from MUS 5423 Foundations of Music Education, MUS 5523 Rehearsal Techniques, or MUS 5542 Music Performance (may be repeated for credit).

  3. 9 semester credit hours of electives of which no more than 2 semester credit hours may be in a music ensemble. Non-music electives are available with consent of the advisor.

Music Education Nonthesis Option

  1. 12 semester credit hours in the area of concentration:

    MUS 5403 Psychological Foundations of Music Education
    MUS 5413 Research in Music Education
    MUS 5423 Foundations of Music Education
    MUS 6423 Seminar in Music Education

  2. 12 semester credit hours of other studies in music to include 9 hours in the areas of theory and analysis (MUS 5103 Applied Systems of Analysis, or MUS 6233 Twentieth-Century Analytical Techniques, or MUS 5133 Topics in Music Theory), history (MUS 5263 Topics in Music History), and research (MUS 5233 Introduction to Music Research). The remaining hours must be satisfied by the completion of a minimum of 6 hours chosen from MUS 5423 Foundations of Music Education, MUS 5523 Rehearsal Techniques, or MUS 5542 Music Performance (may be repeated for credit).

  3. 12 semester credit hours of electives of which no more than 2 semester credit hours may be in a music ensemble. Nonmusic electives are available with consent of the advisor.

Special Degree Requirements: Students selecting the Music Education emphasis must successfully complete written and oral comprehensive examinations.

Piano Pedagogy and Performance

Candidates for the Master of Music degree with an emphasis in Piano Pedagogy and Performance must complete a total of 36 semester credit hours:

  1. 22 semester credit hours in the area of concentration:

    12 semester credit hours in pedagogy studies:

    MUS 5421 Practicum in Advanced Teaching
    MUS 5533 Pedagogy of Musical Performance (2 semesters)
    MUS 5572 Class Piano Pedagogy
    MUS 6903 Project in Music Pedagogy

    10 semester credit hours in performance studies:

    MUS 5433 Performance Repertoire
    MUS 5542 Music Performance (3 semesters)
    MUS 6941 Recital

  2. 9 semester credit hours in the areas of theory and analysis (MUS 5103 Applied Systems of Analysis, or MUS 6233 Twentieth-Century Analytical Techniques, or MUS 5133 Topics in Music Theory), history (MUS 5263 Topics in Music History), and research (MUS 5233 Introduction to Music Research).

Graduate Certificate in Keyboard Pedagogy

Candidates for the Graduate Certificate in Keyboard Pedagogy must complete a total of 15 semester credit hours:

MUS 5533 Pedagogy of Musical Performance (two semesters) = 6 hours
MUS 5421 Practicum in Advanced Teaching = 1 hour
MUS 5572 Pedagogy of Group Instruction = 2 hours
MUS 6903 Project in Piano Pedagogy = 3 hours
MUS 5542 Music Performance = 2 hours
MUS 6971 Special Problems = 1 hour (this will consist of 2 or 3 Saturday morning workshops with experts in the field)


Graduate Certificate in Keyboard Performance

Candidates for the Graduate Certificate in Keyboard Perforamance must complete a total of 15 semester credit hours:

MUS 5554 Music Performance (two semesters) = 8 hours
MUS 6941 Recital = 1 hour (two recitals – one solo, one chamber) = 2 hours
MUS 5711 Graduate Ensemble = 2 hours
MUS 5583 Advanced Instrumental Techniques = 3 hours
