Soprano April Hufty is a native of Abilene, Texas. She received her Bachelors and Masters of Music degrees in Vocal Performance from the University of Texas at San Antonio where she studied with Prof. Linda Poetschke. While at UTSA, April performed extensively with the music department’s Lyric Theatre. Her opera roles included: Anna Gomez (The Consul), Rose (Street Scene), Papagena (Die Zauberflöte), Gretel (Hänsel and Gretel), Josephine (H.M.S. Pinafore), and Thesalia (world premiere-Gods of Mischief). April has also been featured as the soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, and Haydn’s Missa brevis in F. In 2004, April debuted at the San Pedro Playhouse as Madame de la Grande Bouche (the wardrobe) in Beauty and the Beast. April has studied at the Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria where she was featured as an aria soloist with the AIMS Orchestra, and placed in the semifinals at the AIMS Meistersinger Competition. She is a a 1st place winner at the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition (NATS) South Texas Auditions and a 2nd place winner of NATS Texoma Region Auditions. Other acknowledgements include the 2002 NATS Vocal Excellence Award and Terry Gordon Opera Award. April is a three time Concerto/Aria winner and a member of Pi Kappa Lambda. Most recently, April has performed and soloed with San Antonio Chamber Choir, San Antonio’s new professional choral ensemble. She has maintained a voice studio for the past seven years teaching at different schools such as Zachry Middle School, O’Connor High School, and Palo Alto College. April teaches private voice instruction and class voice at UTSA. Other responsibilities include coordinating recruiting, new student auditions, and choir camp.
