Janice K. Hodges Contemporary Piano Competition

ELIGIBILITY

Any piano student from grades four through twelve who is a Texas resident or studies with a Texas-resident teacher. Teachers are not required to be a member of a music teachers’ organization to enter students.

AWARDS

First, second, and third place winners from grades 4 through 12 will receive a trophy. Each student will receive judges’ comments evaluating his or her performance. At the discretion of the judges, the grade 12 winner will be eligible to receive a renewable scholarship award of up to $3,000 per year for study as an undergraduate music major at UTSA. Awards will be announced at the conclusion of each divisional competition.

ENTRY FEE

A non-refundable entry fee of $15.00 must accompany the entry form. Applications must be postmarked no later than January 2, 2004. This deadline is firm. Late applications will not be accepted. The number of entries per teacher is unlimited. Please make checks payable to: UTSA Department of Music.

GENERAL RULES

1.       The grade level indicated on the repertoire list is equivalent to the grade level in school. Students are allowed to compete only at their school grade level. Participants will be disqualified if they are entered in an incorrect grade level.

2.       Decisions of the judges are final and may not be questioned by participants, parents, or teachers. Judges will reserve the right not to select a first-place winner or to allow ties for any place. Judges’ comment sheets will be mailed directly to teachers no later than February 11, 2004.

3.       Students from the same teaching studio will not be scheduled to follow each other in the competition.

4.       Teachers will be notified by mail of audition times. All participating SAMTA teachers must assist with the competition either on the competition day or before.

5.       Repertoire must be selected from the list provided in this brochure and must be performed from memory. Each contestant must provide the judges an original copy of the music with the measures numbered. Judges will not accept photocopied music.

6.       Note that the 2004 Repertoire list contains 3 choices of works (A, B, or C) for each grade level. Students must select only one complete option, A, B, or C, listed for the grade level. Where two or more compositions are listed within an option, the works may be performed in any order.
