Course Description
This course involves a study of a variety of analytical techniques to assist the conductor-performer-analyst better understand tonal music. We will describe and discuss these different systems of analysis, as well as apply them to music.

Goals of the Course:
After completing this course, the student should be able to analyze tonal music using a variety of analytical techniques, all of which the student should be able to competently discuss.

Grading and course policies
Final grades will be determined by your work on Homework Assignments and class preparation (20%), Class Participation (5%), and three Papers (20% each for papers 1 and 3, 35% for paper 2, for 75% total). Homework will be accepted past the day it is due, but usually not for a grade or credit. Papers will not be accepted late without prior consent.

Other Course Policies:
Students are expected to assist in maintaining a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. To assure all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, students are prohibited from engaging in any form of distraction .Inappropriate behavior in the classroom shall result, minimally, in a request to leave the class. Examples of inappropriate behavior include the use of cellular phones or beepers, eating in the classroom, prolonged chattering, excessive tardiness, sleeping, and overt inattentiveness.
