Call for Scores and Papers:

The Society of Composers, Inc. Region VI Conference at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Department of Music, February 24-26, 2005, David Heuser, host

Composers are invited to submit scores for all orchestral instruments, piano, organ, guitar, and/or voice (soprano, tenor, or baritone) in any combination for performance by UTSA faculty or students, as well as works for the following ensembles:

  • the UTSA Faculty Woodwind Quintet,
  • the UTSA Concert Choir (works for choir and tape are encouraged),
  • the UTSA Women’s Choir,
  • the UTSA Jazz Choir,
  • the UTSA Orchestra [*2 *2 *2 2-4331-4 perc, harp, keyboard, strings (8,8,5,5,5) (* indicates one player can double)],
  • the UTSA String Orchestra [6, 6, 4, 4, 2],
  • the UTSA Wind Ensemble,
  • the UTSA Flute Ensemble,
  • the UTSA Guitar Ensemble,
  • the UTSA Percussion Ensemble, and
  • the UTSA Steel Drum Ensemble.

AURA, the New Music Ensemble of the University of Houston will be the guest ensemble for the conference. Pieces for AURA can be for any combination of flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, violin (2 players), viola, cello, double bass, piano (2 players), saxophone (soprano or alto - 2 players), and percussion. Works intended for the Aura New Music Ensemble may also be considered by UTSA performers.

Composers are welcome to submit electro-acoustic music and pieces for soloist and electronics. Composers providing their own (guest) performers are encouraged.

Submissions from all SCI members will be considered, with preference given to those in Region VI. Composers must be members of SCI and are required to attend the conference. Each composer may submit up to two pieces; each work may be a maximum of 15 minutes.

The scores will be selected by the ensemble directors and performers, with input from the conference host. Scores for AURA will be selected by the director of that ensemble, Rob Smith, with input from the conference host.

Composer Submissions Must Include:

  • one copy of the score, with performance materials for works for up to three performers (performance materials for larger ensembles must be available by November 1, 2004).
  • a separate cassette/CD of each work submitted, if available.
  • an email (to dheuser@utsa.edu), or sheet of paper with the composer’s name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, SCI Regional Affiliation, titles of works submitted, with timings and instrumentation for each work. Eectro-acoustic or computer works must include a list of technical requirements (and information about what will be supplied by the composer, if anything).
  • an SASE for return of materials.
  • a list of the performers, if they are provided by the composer.

Paper/Workshop Submissions Must Include:

  • 3 copies of a 1-page synopsis suitable for inclusion in the conference program,
  • logistic and equipment requirements, and timing, and
  • an email (to dheuser@utsa.edu), or sheet of paper with your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and title of paper/workshop.

Submission Deadline:

All the materials need to be received by September 1, 2004 except those intended for the Aura New Music Ensemble, which must be received by August 20, 2004. Composers whose works and/or papers have been selected will be notified by November 1, 2004, by which time parts for larger works will be required.
