 FAQ'S about UTSA Instrumental Ensembles

Auditions Instruments Lockers
Do I have to be a music major to play in a music group at UTSA?

No! All students, regardless of their major, are welcome to audition and participate in all of our instrumental ensembles.

When are auditions?

Auditions are held before the beginning of each semester, usually starting two or three weekdays before the first day of class. Since classes usually begin on a Monday, auditions would be on the previous Wednesday, Thursday, and/or Saturday. Call the Department of Music office (210/458-4354) to find out exact dates and times for your instrument and the specific ensemble(s) in which you are interested.

Why must I audition?

Our auditions are used to help you find an ensemble suitable to your playing skills and interests. It also allows the director to meet you and "inventory" the skill level of the ensemble members so appropriate music can be selected.

I haven't played my instrument in 4 years! What can you tell from hearing me audition?

Plenty! Even if you're out of shape, we can at least access your basic skills, learn of your playing experiences, and postulate your potential for "getting it back." We are accustomed to hearing "former" musicians and are more delighted to "welcome you back" than to chastise you! Every semester we hear at least a couple of people who haven't played for a long time and we haven't scolded anyone yet! : )

What should I play for my audition?

We encourage you to prepare at least four minutes worth of music for your audition. You might wish to select etudes or solo excerpts from works you have played for lessons, Region Try-outs, Solo & Ensemble, or other performances. If possible, we would like to hear contrasting selections: one that is fast and technical, and one that is slow and lyrical. You do not need an accompanist.

What happens during my audition?

We will hear you play your prepared pieces and probably have a little (just a little!) sight-reading music for you. After that, we'll talk about your musical experiences and help you find an ensemble to play in. It will all take about 10 minutes.

Does UTSA have an instrument I can use?

Probably. It is preferred that you use your own instrument. The reasons are two-fold: first, the instruments owned by UTSA are not always in the best condition and may not be as good as your own; secondly, UTSA instruments are used for other classes and might not be available for your sole use. Large instruments (tubas, horns, bari sax, etc.) will require sharing.

How do I get an instrument to prepare for my audition?

If you don't have an instrument, we'll try to let you use one of ours for a few practice sessions before your audition. You'll need to coordinate the practice dates and times with an ensemble director because until you are registered in the ensemble, we cannot "sign-out" an instrument for you to keep. Some students prefer to borrow one from their high school director for summer use.

Where can I store my instrument?

Students who participate in instrumental ensembles at UTSA will be assigned an instrument locker free of charge. Instrument locker assignments are made by the Instrument Room staff and are assigned based on the size of your instrument. If you wish to store your books, school supplies, etc. in a campus locker, you will need to obtain a student locker. NOTE: String instrument lockers are assigned in the Music Department office.

How do I get a student locker?

The College of Fine Arts and Humanities requires a $15 per semester fee for use of a student locker. Locker assignment is made by the Department of Music office staff. To get a locker, go to the Bursar's Office and pay the required locker-user fee. Then bring your receipt to the Music Department office. They will assign a locker to you and give you the locker key. You may renew the same locker each semester through the Music Department office (after paying the Bursar, of course!).

Are there rehearsals outside of the scheduled ensemble time that I must attend?

Most ensembles rehearse only at the scheduled time. Upon occasion, a need may arise for a brief sectional rehearsal or special run-through. Some ensembles tour during the semester; members are excused from university classes for participation in these events.

How is my grade in the ensemble determined?

Ensemble directors determine their own grading policies and specify them in the syllabus passed out at the beginning of the semester. If in doubt, ask the ensemble director before registering.

I'm new to UTSA this semester. Should I register for an ensemble before I audition?

We suggest you go ahead and register for the group(s) in which you are most interested, even if you haven't yet auditioned. If, after you audition, you need to change to a different group, we'll let you know how. If you are auditioning for one of the concert bands (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band), try to keep the time slots for all open. Because there is limited seating in these groups and placement will not be determined until after auditions, it is much simpler to have the time slots for all three ensembles open on your schedule than dropping and adding classes that conflict with your assigned ensemble.

Why must I register for the ensemble? Can't I just "sit-in" without credit?

Department of Music policy requires registration for classes you attend. Your registration in the ensemble signifies a commitment to the group. Plus, your collegiate musical activities are documented on your academic transcripts. Like all university courses, the grade you receive for ensemble participation averages directly into your GPA (Grade Point Average).
