

CAROL RUSTOWICZ – Carol Rustowicz is completing her 10th year of public school teaching as a Middle School Band Director. This will be her 3rd year as the Camp Director. Mrs. Rustowicz enjoys playing her saxophone in the San Antonio Wind Symphony and has also performed for the San Antonio Spurs, San Antonio Missions and the San Antonio symphony. She has a 23-year-old son (to be married June 26th!) and a 21-year-old daughter. During the fall, she and her husband, Bob, spend time at their hunting lease in Comfort, TX and at the future site of their new home in Bandera, Texas.
CINDY SOLIS – Cindy Solis is the Events Manager for the UTSA Department of Music. She has worked with the UTSA Middle School Band Camp since it’s beginning in 2001 and she continues to do an outstanding job in facilitating the camp.
LACY LANSFORD- Lacy Lansford has been with the camp for several years and will be returning as the Assistant Director. She coordinates all of the day-to-day activities to facilitate the camp. Ms. Lansford is currently the Head Band Director at Kitty Hawk Middle School in Judson ISD. She was previously an Assistant Band Director at Driscoll Middle School in Northeast ISD.
BRANDON HOWARD – Brandon Howard graduated from UTSA in May 2008 and is finishing his first year of teaching as the Assistant Band Director at Woodlake Hills Middle School in Judson ISD. Mr. Howard is a graduate of Ronald Reagan High School here in San Antonio. He returns to our Band Camp staff for the 2nd year as an Administrator working with scheduling and planning.
DR. DAVID FREGO – Dr. Frego is new to the Band Camp faculty this year and new to the UTSA Department of Music. He will be part of the Sound Revolution Elective Rotation. David Frego, Chair, Department of Music is a leading specialist in Dalcroze Eurhythmics. He works internationally with students and teachers in a movement technique that internalizes rhythm and pitch.
Dalcroze Eurhythmics has been applied in educational and therapeutic
settings.
NOEL POMPA – Mr. Pompa is returning to the camp this year. He was a smashing success with all of us and a lot of fun. He will be part of the Sound Revolution Elective Rotation as well as teaching the Leadership class and working with Recreation.
Noel Pompa has 30 years of experience in the Mental Health field. He has been a ROPES facilitator for 20 of those years, working with a wide range of organizations. These include: schools, hospitals, camps, corporate groups, sports organizations, and universities. Noel has traveled to Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, and Russia to teach and give workshops on a variety of subjects, such as: team building, stress management, staff development, and conflict resolution to name a few. He is an active member with TERA, AEE, and TAPHERD. Noel is currently working with the Center for Health Care Services. When he’s not at CHCS, he can be found in the ocean SCUBA diving, or on some rock, climbing to his heart’s content.
RICK FLORES – Rick Flores returns to the Band Camp Faculty this year as the Blue Band Director. Mr. Flores directs bands at Washington Irving Academy in San Antonio. His groups have thrived in the annual state competition. He previously taught for three years at Truman Middle School. Mr. Flores was named Texas Teacher of the Year in 2004 and received the Trinity Prize honoring the outstanding teacher in the San Antonio area.
DR. SI MILLICAN – Si Millican returns to the Band Camp Faculty this year as the Orange Band Director. He is in his 2nd at UTSA and teaches courses in instrumental music education. He taught high school band in Belton, Texas and middle school band in Flower Mound Texas in the Lewisville Independent School District. He and his wife Sherry have a eight-year-old son, five-year-old daughter and a
Cat named Elvis!
ROD HERRERA - Rod Herrera returns to the Band Camp for his 3rd year as the Blue Band Percussion Instructor. Rod is currently a Band Director and percussion instructor at Holmes High School. He also performs with the San Antonio Wind Symphony.
BRIAN RUIZ – Brian will be joining the Band Camp faculty this year as the Orange Band Percussion Instructor. He is currently the band director at Vale Middle School in Northside. Brian graduated from UTSA with a degree in Music Education and worked at Mercedes High School and Taft High School before going to Vale. He enjoys playing golf, writing music, playing with his dog “Rimshot”, and spending time with his wife and step-son.
MARI CYR – Mari Cyr has been with the Band Camp since it’s first year in 2001. She is a graduate of UTSA and currently the head Band Director at Kirby Middle School in the Judson District. Mrs. Cyr is the Flute Instructor for the camp. Mrs. Cyr teaches flute master classes throughout the San Antonio area. She is a member of the San Antonio Wind Symphony and the San Antonio Fiesta Flute Choir.
GUERRINA ESPARZA – Guerrina M. Esparza joined the Band Camp faculty last year and will be the Clarinet Instructor again this year. She has been a Band Director at Katherine Stinson Middle School for the past 11 years, but will be the Head Band director at the new Garcia Middle School in Northside. Previously, she was the director of bands at Anson Jones M.S., Hondo ISD, and Natalia ISD. Mrs. Esparza is a Clarinetist and a member of the San Antonio Wind Symphony. In May of 2009, she will complete her 24th year of teaching music in the public school system.
RICHELLE MOLINA – Richelle Molina has been a part of the Band Camp over the past seven years. She will be the Low Reeds/Music Theory Instructor for the week. She is in her 11th year of teaching and currently the Director of Bands at Anson Jones Middle School in NISD. Richelle has both her Bachelors and Masters degree from UTSA in Music Education. She is also an active member of the Helotes Community Band. Richelle is married to Travis and they live with his daughter, Alexandra.
DEANA JOHNSON – Deana Johnson will be returning to the Band Camp faculty for the 3rd year as the Oboe Instructor. She is in her 12th year at Rudder Middle School as the Orchestra Director. Mrs. Johnson is also in her 26th year as a free-lance oboist and private teacher. She has 3 children, ages 19, 16, and 9 and also loves to travel and garden.
RON NOBLE – Mr. Noble is returning to the Band Camp Faculty as the Bassoon Instructor. He holds a BME from DePaul University and a MM from UTSA. He has been the bassoon instructor at UTSA since 1996. He is in his 30th season with the San Antonio Symphony, playing contrabassoon and bassoon. He is also the Principal Bassoon with the San Antonio Lyric Opera. Ron has performed with the Dallas, Austin, Corpus Christi and Naples (Florida) symphonies.
BRYAN SILVIA – Bryan Silvia joins the Band Camp again for the 3rd year as the Saxophone/Jazz 2 Instructor. He graduated from UTSA in May 2009 and will be a full-time Middle School Band Director. Mr. Silvia is a 2- time Texas All-State saxophonist and a graduate of Judson High School. He has also performed with the San Antonio Symphony and is currently a member of the San Antonio Wind Symphony.
JOEY PEREIRA -He joins the Band Camp Faculty this year as the French Horn Instructor. He taught previously in Odessa at ECISD and is currently a band director at Holmes High School. He is a graduate of Judson High School, Angelo State University and UTSA where he finished his Masters in Music. Joey plays horn in the San Antonio Wind Symphony as well as teaching private lessons.
ED RIOS – Ed Rios joins our Band Camp faculty as the Trumpet Instructor. He is a native of San Antonio and graduated from UTSA. He is currently teaching in his 2nd year at Jackson Middle School in the North East Independent School District. As a musician he has performed all over the country at venues including the Hollywood Bowl, The Kennedy Center and the White House. Mr. Rios currently plays trumpet with the San Antonio Wind Symphony, Mariachi Campanas de America, and various bands in and around the area.
COLLIN CORRINGTON – Collin Corrington is returning for his 2nd year at Band Camp as the Trombone Instructor. Originally a native of Seguin, TX he currently resides in San Antonio is the Assistant Band Director for Anson Jones Middle School. He holds a Bachelors degree in Music Education from Texas Lutheran University specializing in Low Brass Instruction.
CHRIS ESPARZA – Chris Esparza returns to the Band Camp faculty for his 3rd year as the Euphonium/Tuba Instructor. He is in his 8th year of teaching and currently the head band director at Pease middle school with the Northside Independent School District, and is a performing musician and private lesson teacher in San Antonio. As a private lesson teacher, Mr. Esparza has produced students that have achieved success at the State, Area, and Region level with one student continuing their musical career at the prestigious Eastman school of music.
As a low brass musician, Mr. Esparza plays trombone and tuba with a wide variety of ensembles ranging from concert bands to salsa bands.
PENNY COMPTON – Penny Compton is new to the Band Camp faculty and will be teaching Jazz Band 1 and the Sound Revolution Elective Rotation. She has taught 28 years in the San Antonio area. Her concert and jazz bands have earned numerous UIL Sweepstakes awards and “Best In Class: awards at music contest and festivals. In 2006 her Jazz Ensemble earned an award for “Outstanding Middle School Instrumental Jazz Ensemble” in the Mark of Excellence competition sponsored by DC Music Festivals. Ms. Compton is an active clinician and adjudicator, and maintains a performing schedule as a trumpet player with various chamber groups and ensembles including the San Antonio Wind Symphony, the San Antonio Brass and the San Antonio Symphony.
JUSTIN YOUNG – Justin Young is joining the Band Camp Faculty as the Music Technology Instructor. Justin is also responsible for all of the website information and updating. Mr. Young is a graduate of Holmes High School as well as UTSA. He is an oboist and performs throughout the San Antonio area.
