Dr. Bess Hieronymus, currently a professor of Music at The University
of Texas at San Antonio, received a Bachelor of Music degree with a major
in piano and an Artist's Diploma in piano from The University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor. She completed a Master of Arts in Music from Smith College
where she wrote her thesis under the direction of one of the world's greatest
authorities on Mozart, the eminent Dr. Alfred Einstein. She was the first
person to receive a Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance and Musicology
from the University of Texas at Austin, Texas. On December 9, 1995, Dr.
Hieronymus was given an honorary Doctor of Humanities from The University
of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Dr. Hieronymus has had a many faceted career. She has performed extensively
as a pianist and as an organist, toured as a chamber music performer,
appeared as featured soloist with symphonic orchestras both as a pianist
and as an organist, conducted choral and instrumental groups and has appeared
as a recitalist at four Regional Conventions of the American Guild of
Organists. She has played recitals in Spain, Italy, Switzerland, France,
Germany, England, Russia, Holland, Austria and the Czech Republic.
The Russian Musical Society and the Soviet Composers awarded her the
third non-Russian membership. She has received many other awards such as
the J.C. Penney Award, The Headliner Award, Texas Teachers Award, Outstanding
Alumni Award for Professional Achievements, two Halls of Fame for exceptional
talent, and the Hieronymus Endowment has been established in her honor
at The University of Texas at San Antonio. The Texas House of Representatives
has passed a resolution thanking her for her musical contributions to
the State of Texas.
