Stacey Davis holds Ph.D. and M.M. degrees in Music Theory from Northwestern University and a B.M. in Violin Performance from Arizona State University. In her research, Dr. Davis seeks to make connections between traditional approaches to music analysis and empirical research in music cognition and perception. One line of research concerns the relationship between implied polyphony and musical structure in J.S. Bach's unaccompanied string works, with particular emphasis placed on how the implied polyphony affects both a perceptual experience and an expressive performance. Another line of projects concerns the relationship between melodic complexity, vocalization, and memory during melodic dictation. Portions of these research projects have been presented at the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition and at conferences for the Society for Music Perception and Cognition, the Society for Research in the Psychology of Music and Music Education, and the College Music Society. Prior to joining the UTSA faculty in 2002, Dr. Davis held a position as a full-time lecturer at Northwestern University and coordinated the music theory program for the National High School Summer Music Institute. At UTSA, Dr. Davis teaches courses in music theory and is the Director of the Institute for Music Research.
